Why write? Why share?

Bell (2009), an author and a news anchor, said, "Two concepts of purpose and service would prove to be the most popular motivators I have ever known, the driving force behind my OCD recovery and outreach, and the essence of everything else that I hope to share in this book" (p. 62-63).

Purpose is "to give birth to the best which is within us" (p. 138).

Service is "giving of our time, talent, or treasure, in an infinite number of ways, always with the objective of empowering others in some constructive fashion”

(p. 138).

Purpose
Write

MY THEORY is that sharing writings helps OCDers to enhance their own sense of purpose and be of service to others. Let me explain how it works.

Service
Share

Many OCDers are people-pleasers

Sharing mental health issues nurtures our humanity that we all experience pain, and that none of us is alone in our suffering.

Sharing their OCD stories gives OCDers great pleasure by being of service to others. OCD peers can feel empathy or take courage from the stories.

Helping Hand

OCD brain is wired to think deeply.

It always wants something to focus its attention on. If it cannot find the something, OCD thoughts will draw its attention.

Writing has many components, such as brainstorming for themes and structures, that require a substantial amount of mental energy.

OCDers are contemplative and creative. They can give birth to the best with their characteristics through the practice of writing.
